Clarence Brantley - A Growing Industry

Clarence Brantley is a veteran entrepreneur who has been involved in many businesses and started a number of companies during a career that dates back to the mid-1970s.

At that time, he owned hair salons in Georgia and in Alabama, and was himself a licensed professional hair stylist. “I serviced well over 1,500 clients from 1977 through 1995,” he recalls. He learned the trade at the Vidal Sassoon Beauty College in Atlanta, which he attended from 1973 to 1975.

This is a good time to get into the salon business, according to a report from the Professional Beauty Association. The PBA says that the salon industry is in a state of growth, and that this will continue for at least the next few years. At last count there were nearly a million hair salons in the United States, and together they generated some forty million dollars a year in sales.

To succeed in the salon business, veterans say you need to have a well-thought-out business plan that defines the business and spells out what it must do to be successful. You need to know how much funding will be required and where it is coming from. You should have a mentor, too, who knows the salon industry and can help guide you in the initial phases of getting the business off the ground. And you’ll need an accounting and inventory program so you can keep track of your money.

Clarence Brantley later got into the used car business, and the real estate development business.
